Subject: A Message to the MVSD Community

Dear Mill Valley School Community:
It is with heartfelt dismay that I send this communication to recognize the disconcerting actions of hate that occurred within a short period of time in our nation.
Two African American individuals were shot and killed at random at a grocery store in Jeffersontown, Kentucky by a man with a history of mental illness and who was known to use racial slurs in his community. Days later, eleven people were killed while six others were injured when a man shouting anti-Semitic slurs opened fire during services in a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Synagogue.
As the word spreads about these acts of violence, please be aware of the following resources that may be helpful when approaching conversations about hate crimes with your child/children.
On November 15, 2018 at 7pm join the Mill Valley community for a film screening of A Light in the Darkness, facilitated by Not in Our Town Executive Director Patrice O'Neill. There will be an opportunity to discuss how we can come together as a community, united against hate. Below are community and educational resources provided by the Anti-Defamation League to assist with addressing hate crimes as they come up throughout our community. And lastly, please be aware that in our classrooms across the District we are integrating social emotional curriculum that provides our students with intentional instruction around acceptance, empathy, respect, self-regulation, and more.
There is no one right way to approach this topic, other than to collectively acknowledge its importance and cultivate building a culture of acceptance, kindness, and understanding.
Thank you in advance for your commitment and support to our community!
With Respect, Raquel Rose
