PHASE ONE Evergreen Homeowners Speak Out
Yesterday, a woman at the corner of Evergreen and Ethel stood on the base rock to try to prevent a concrete sidewalk from being poured too close to her fence. But she and her friend proved too much for the concrete truck. Mr. Kinsey admitted the process was flawed, yet still construction moves forward. Already, pollution has been added to Reed Creek, habitat for federally protected species. A growing number of people who use Evergreen state they would rather see Evergreen left alone than see this impervious slab of concrete inflicted upon it. We have offered low cost alternatives - that match the paths on most of the street! Yet, the million dollar raised impervious slab sidewalk project moves forward.
This is what happens when politics gets in the middle of the process, so "County can be reimbursed for money already spent."
The way I see it (and others share this viewpoint) is a blatant misuse of Safe Routes to Schools funding.

DeleteSure would have been nice to have had a tree lined parkway with 4'-0" wide pervious asphalt ADA compliant pathhway as at Muir Woods National Park with on-street parking strips as pervious drainage swales. Such a neighborhood design concept would have been less expensive to build and preferable in my opinion.

As you wish and state the "Best Thing to Happen to Homestead Valley" is a 4'6" wide grey concrete sidewalk with 8 ADA ramps and mats at street crossings and 29 ups and downs at driveways to the delight of skateboarders.
Sure would have been democratic to have given the right to decide the future design of their sidewalk to the 35 or so homeowners whose homes are on the sidewalk as Supervisor Kinsety promised in Nov. 2011.
But no we live in actually in a Democratic controled County masquerading as a democracy where residents along a street are told what's best for them by others who aren't impacted and aren't legaly responsible for maintaincce costs or legally lioable for accidents.
As a national and international acclaimed award wining architect and urban designer of cities and planned unit residential neighborhoods the voices of those who live on a street or in neighborhood are the voicess to be heard and heeded when designing their places of well being.
